What is PLA? PLA stands for polylactide or polylactic acid. It is a polymer with unique properties. Most important, it is derived from renewable agricultural resources in our case sugar beets, contributing to a more sustainable world.

What can be made with Hycail PLA? Hycail PLA is a transparent thermoplastic polymer and can processed on conventional processing equipment. Some of the end-uses are rigid trays, containers, biaxially oriented film, fibers, chewing gum base, hot melts and paper coating resin.

How much does Hycail PLA cost? We offer competitive pricing

Is Hycail’s feedstock GMO free? Yes our raw materials are guaranteed GMO free. We can certify this back to the agricultural source, in case required.

What is Hycail? Hycail is a manufacturing company producing resins and polymers based on lactic acid. Who owns Hycail ? Hycail is owned by DFA, Dairy Farmers of America, the largest dairy cooperation of the USA.

How much raw material is used of 1 kg Hycail PLA? We use 1.25 kg of sugar to produce 1 kg of PLA

What is the raw material which used for Hycail PLA? Hycail uses lactic acid which is made form sugar which is extracted from sugar beets. Is Hycail PLA GMO free ? Yes Hycail PLA is GMO free. Also the agricultural crop (sugar beets) is a non GM crop.

Is the raw material of Hycail PLA GMO free? Yes the raw material of Hycail PLA is sugar beets harvested in Europa and are guaranteed non GM crops.

Is Hycail PLA degradable? Yes, Hycail PLA is degradable under certain conditions.

Is Hycail PLA biode gradable? Yes, Hycail PLA is biodegradable. Through a metabolic conversion PLA breaks down into water en carbon dioxide Is Hycail PLA compostable ? Yes, Hycail PLA is compostable under industrial composting conditions. These conditions are 60 º and a relative humidity of minimum 98 %. The remaining product is water end carbon dioxide.

What is degradable? Degradable describes the ability of a material break down into smaller (molecular) units under the influence of for example heat, UV light, oxygen or water. This will result in the loss of properties and ultimately the material will disintegrate.

What is biodegradable? Biodegradable means that a material will degrade under the influence of the natural environment into substances harmless to the environment.

What is compostable? Compostable means that a material will be digested by microbes and transformed into water and carbon dioxide under certain conditions. The key is the metabolic conversion. To asses if a material is compostable internal norm is developed the EN 13432.

Ïs Hycail PLA sustainable? Yes,Hycail PLA is made from natural occurring agricultural resource and uses less energy to make. In that sense it is a more sustainable alternative to incumbent plastics.

What is sustainability? Our definition is that we try to operate of the interest of our resources and not on the resources itself, always looking for the optimum balance between social, environmental and economical aspect. The official definition has been developed by Brontland (link)

How large is Hycail’s production capacity? Our semi-works facility produces several hundred metric tonnes depending on the balance of the different types we are running.

What are the waste management options for Hycail PLA? Hycail PLA can be disposed off in any existing generic waste management option with the addition of industrial composting.

On what plastic conversion equipment will Hycail PLA run? Hycail PLA will run any conventional plastic conversion equipment. Small changes might be required for optimum performance

Is Hycail PLA suitable for fiber production? Yes, Hycail PLA can be processed on fibber spinning equipment

What targets is Hycail pursuing?
